Happy Holidays

I'm a bit early with sending The Phonex Times this month, but I would guess that a lot of folks will be taking vacations soon. Can I come, too?

To keep us in the holiday spirit, this monthly edition is a little lighter than most.

Great Christmas gift ideas

As for safety and convenience issues, cell phone headsets are hard to beat. There are a variety of styles to suit everyone, at prices that won't dent your credit card. Starting at $20, these are very cool and becoming more popular every day.

At 16 ½ inches tall, the Golfbag telephone is sure to be noticed and appreciated by the golfers in your family. At $59, this great quality telephone is a good deal.

Presidential quote of the day

"No man who ever held the office of president would congratulate a friend on obtaining it."
- John Adams

Wireless PC to phone calls

There are a lot of folks taking advantage of free long distance calls via the internet. At last count, some 25 million have registered and are regularly using these free services in North America alone.

The system requirements for your PC are fairly basic, except that you may want to update your sound card. This can easily be done for free by going to the website of the manufacturer of your sound card, and clicking on the "updates" or "downloads" link.

The computer mic and speakers aren't very well equipped for voice communications, as they will tend to cause feedback. Plantronics makes the best quality PC headsets, and the prices are reasonable. You can see them at pcheadsets.html

If you want to go wireless, use the Plantronics CS10 wireless headset system, a Polaris cord and a PC adapter cord. Then you can roam around the office or home while calling for free.

Q. Where do I sign up?
A. Here are my recommendations for free pc to phone call sites:
www.deltathree.com for US and Canada phone calls
www.hottelephone.com for over 30 countries worldwide

Q. Are these services truly free?
A. Yes. Deltathree and Hottelephone make their money by selling ads, so it's completely free to you.

Q. What kind of sound quality can I expect?
A. It's not the same as a standard telephone call, but close. If you are using a PC headset, an updated sound card and a reasonably fast internet connection speed (56k or better), then it's about as good as can be expected.

There is a certain amount of static, delays in voices, and so forth. In time, bandwidth is going to become cheaper and more available, so the sound quality will improve.

And it's free, so it can save a small fortune off your phone bill.

Send an email to Santa (Cool Links)

I came across this site the other day, and it looks like a lot of fun. My son immediately sent an email wishlist to Santa. See this one at http://www.santaland.com

Anyone want to buy an embassy?

Thailand is investigating the unauthorized sale of its embassy in the Netherlands to a Dutch businessman for $1.4 million.

Supposedly, the former ambassador -- who served in the post from 1996-99 -- sold the embassy property in May 1999 without approval from the Thai government. The case made headlines last week after a Dutch businessman demanded the current ambassador vacate the prime real estate in the heart of the Dutch capital.

The ex-envoy has claimed he was tricked into signing the sales contract, which he said was in Dutch.

Editors note:
If anyone happens to know the qualifications for becoming an ambassador, I would be highly interested. I'm convinced there's a beach spot in the Caribbean with my name on it.

Joke of the day

Two husbands were discussing their married lives. Although
happily married, they admitted that there were arguments
sometimes. Then Chad said, "I've made one great discovery.
Now I know how to always have the last word."

"Wow!" said Sherm, "how did you manage that?"

"It's easy," replied Chad. "My last word is always 'Yes, Dear.'"
